Ring of Languages
This plain bronze band, measuring half an inch wide, resembles nothing more than a personal trinket of not much value when observed with the naked eye. Closer inspection, however, will reveal many extremely small runic symbols engraved in a zigzag pattern around the ring. Any individual with the proficiency to read will be able to decipher its meaning, although the runes give no hint to what the rings actual function really is. Actually, the runes on the band are nothing more than an ancient alphabet from A to Z flowing in one continuous loop around the band. This also allows for the ring, in many cases, to be ignored by thieves or others looking for treasure, which is due to its non-valuable appearance. Nevertheless, anyone able to detect magic will soon find that the ring emanates strong alteration magic.
When placed on the finger, the ring grants the user the ability to comprehend and speak any language, either written or spoken, and decipher any runic symbols or writings, modern or ancient. This includes the languages of all monsters, including undead. Although the ring does not allow speaking with dead, it will allow the comprehension of the dead creatures language if a speak with dead spell is cast so that communication can continue normally. Even "Thieves Cant" is no match for this ring.
Although a powerful magic item, it does have some limitations. Any language that uses gestures or other mannerisms, along with any psychic form of communication, will not be affected by the ring. This includes sign language, telepathy and any other form of body language. And the only spoken language not affected by the power of the ring is the secret language of druids. Since the special Druidic language has been so secret over time, no one but a druid has ever experienced it. Thus the ring has never been empowered to comprehend it. Any druid character wanting to speak their special language must state so ahead of time, otherwise it will be assumed that the rings user will automatically comprehend what the Druid is saying.
The ring will work for all character classes and is a valuable asset when adventuring. It is extremely rare and many individuals, especially wizards and priests, will go out of their way to locate and possess one, since reading many ancient tomes and script enable them to learn much faster. However, only evil characters will do whatever it takes to get one. In addition, any wizard possessing such an item will also be granted a 10% bonus to their chance of learning a new spell roll. This item may be used indefinitely and does not possess any other ability. The ring will not function within any dead magic or anti-magic area.
