Road Encounters


The following is a list of various encounters and situations that characters may run into while traveling between towns or between adventures. Roll a 1d100 to get a quick road encounter.

A lone human (or is it a Doppleganger?) driving a horse-drawn wagon with a sign reading "Dalvin's Herbal Medicines" hanging from its side

The road is blocked by rocks

A fallen tree across the road

A peasant traveler asks to join the party

A young human female picking flowers by the side of the road

An old human beggar who asks for coins
12-14

An old weather-beaten stand on the side of the road with a human female (or a Yuan-Ti) selling poison antidotes (only a 10% chance that they work)

Noises and shapes will be heard and seen in the darkness of the forest next to the road (50% chance that they are just harmless animals, otherwise, it is a monster of the DM's choice)

An angry wizard who mistakes the characters for his enemies

Mud slide caused by a recent rainfall

A slave caravan offering to sell the characters one of its slaves (at a high cost), or the slavers could try to capture the characters to sell at the next town

A baby goblin in a basket crying on the road side

Another adventuring group traveling in the opposite direction

A magical gate to another world or one of the planes opens in front of the group

A flight of dragons (1d6) fly over the group. There is a 1d6 chance the dragons will attack the group, depending on the dragons' alignment

A group (1d20) of lumber cutters chopping down trees

A goat herder crossing his herd (1d100) blocking the characters' path

A group (1d10+2) of bandits spring on the group demanding all of their coins

A group (1d8) of undead (50% skeletons, 30% zombies, 20% ghouls) shambling out of a hole along side the road

A group of human hunters (1d4) returning to town with a few fresh kills

A burned wagon laying in the road with humanoid footprints leading away

A gypsy caravan setting up camp. They may invite the characters to join in their dancing and fun, or they may use the group for dinner

A rough looking warrior in plate-mail armor riding a horse

A shady looking elf offering to sell the characters a cache of magic items (he is an ogre-mage in disguise and will attack the group as soon as possible)

An elven archer fixing his bow. He will ask to travel with the group for a while and will tell the group about the local area if asked

A lone cow will follow the group

A group of pilgrims traveling to the town the group just left (DM can determine the group size and religion)

A dirty traveler who asks the characters for food and drink. If they oblige him, he will offer them a treasure map

A group of gnomes (1d20) trying to get their newest invention to work

A lightning bolt strikes and knocks a nearby tree towards the group

A human on horseback in plate armor directs you to the side of the road to allow a royal guard procession through

A traveling circus going in the direction of the group

A hunchback human driving a black wagon with a coffin in the back

A group of surveyors mapping out and marking the location for a new road

A young couple picnicking in a field along the road

A dead dwarf lying face down with a dagger in his back. All his equipment has been taken

A family trying to repair a wheel on their wagon

A group of female humans performing a may pole dance while their friends watch from the sideline

A group of road repairmen inform the group that the road is closed for repairs

A large caravan traveling in the direction the group is going asks the characters to join as extra guard

A bounty hunter mistakes one of the party for his prey and attacks

The characters happen upon the remains of a battle and find a sole survivor asking them to avenge the death of his friends

A group of leprechauns follow the group, playing pranks whenever able

A half-torn treasure map and 1d6 gold coins in an old leather sack
