Traveler's Rest

Thomkin sat at one of the tables in the bar late one night, doing the usual. That is, he was drinking ale and going over the day’s profits. He was rather enjoying himself, since it was the first time in a while he hadn’t had to contend with Erica the Witch (well, gee thanks). Suddenly two people came in the bar.

“We’re closed,” said Thom without looking up.

“Good. We won’t be disturbed, then. Annie, lock the door.” said a young man in a black robe.

“Right, guv,” said a young girl as she walked over and did as she was told.

“I told you we were closed. Hey, get away from that door. What do you think this is?” Thom said as got up from his table, the chair falling over behind him.

“We think this is a stick up. What do you think it is?” said the young man.

“I think this is your day to die,” Thomkin said fiercely, hand on the dagger at his belt.

“Of course, you do. Get him Annie,” said the young man, gesturing toward Thom.

“Right, guv,” said Annie, heading over to Thomkin. She stopped about half way over and just stared. “Thomkin?”

“Annie?” said Thom.

“Well, I’ll be damned. I hadn’t heard you’d gone straight. What a bloody shame. You was such a nice thief too.”

“People get old Annie. So what’s the big idea robbing me?”

“Guild orders. Big Alfred sent us. You know how it is.”

“No I don’t. Never did join a guild. Didn’t want anyone telling me what to do.”

“Get on with it, Annie,” the young man said impatiently.

“Aw, keep your pants on. We’ll get to it in a minute. We’s old friends, we are.”

“No we won’t,” said Thom.

“Oh, of course we will. So, Eric, did Big Alfred say we should leave him dead or alive?”

“Alive, as a warning to the rest of the town.”

“Alive? You sure?”

“Yep.”

“Oh.” She paused for a moment, then said “Right then. Hands up, Thom.”

“In your dreams.”

“Aw, be a sport, Thom. I don’t want this to take all night.”

“Sport nothing! You were ready to kill me.”

Annie shrugged. “Yeah, but the boss doesn’t want it that way. Lucky you.”

Annie started to approach Thom when Theresa the barmaid came from behind the bar with a crossbow in each hand. “Yes, it would seem to be his lucky day,” she said.

“Took you long enough to wake up back there,” said Thom ungratefully.

“Aw shut up, Thom,” said Theresa, “I’m saving you life.”

“Nah, I already said we wasn’t gonna to kill ‘im. What are ye, deef.”

“Come on, Annie. Let’s go,” said the young man in robes.

“Oh no, you don’t. We’re going to wake the constable. You just stand right there,” said Thom.

Annie stared at Thom incredulously. “You really have gone straight. That’s just sick, that is. Why I remember when you.....”

All three shouted, “Shut up Annie.”

Roleplaying notes:
Annie is a career thief. She lives her work, and the guild is her family. She generally talks about her work and guild operations as anyone would talk about their work--as if it were perfectly normal. It can be a bit unsettling to listen to at times. It’s the rest of the world that’s odd to her. The outside world is just something to steal from or someone to kill if the boss tells her to. One gets the impression of an almost total amorality of which she is unaware. But just because she loves her job doesn’t mean she won’t grumble once in a while and get sarcastic about her co-workers and their thieving skills if they don’t measure up to her standards (usually meaning that a job has gone wrong in some way). She doesn’t like to think much, unless she’s getting paid to. She prefers to be the muscle and the protector of the group. She generally keeps a shoping list with her, where she will jot down something that strikes her fancy that she wants to get at a later date. Currently she wants a bag of holding.

Additional roleplaying notes: Depending on how you look at the alignment system, Annie could be considered by some to have evil tendancies, especially as I’ve played her. She is just a bit too eager to kill, and is almost disappointed when she’s asked to merely knock someone out. It depends on how you want to play her and how much evil you want in your campaign.
