At the start of D&D 3rd edition, Wizards released Into the Dragon’s Lair, a high level large-scale adventure that centers around war-ravaged Cormyr after the death of King Azoun. The larger adventure book is a mixed bag, and contains mainly good and and some bad material.
The game is based on the novel, Death of the Dragon, and involves the characters trying to help restore law and order to the chaos surrounding Cormyr. The module contains of quite a few minor side treks that enhance the main story line, and give the players more than one direction to go in. There are also many foes of different degrees of difficulty that the players will encounter along the way. Other parts of the module have the players looking for the City of Grodd, and the Demiplanar of the elf-dragon Nalavara. As a whole, the adventure concentrates on game play over rules, which I think shows that this module was originally written for 2nd edition but quickly converted to 3rd when the new rules came out.
When this module first appeared, there was little supporting Forgotten Realms material to use in conjunction with the adventure. Three years later, this isn’t the case, so now anyone buying this module should not have a problem trying to fill the gaps that were initially left open in the wake of non-published Forgotten Realms accessories.
This module has a good story line and unique characters that Forgotten Realms fans should enjoy. It does lack some direction though, which is the bad part of this adventure book. The player and DM may find themselves searching for which way to go with the adventure and how to succeed in the end with their mission.
