This comic, produced by Vertigo (DC Comics adult line) tells the story of Jessie Custer, a preacher in a small Texas town who becomes possessed by a creature named Genesis, the offspring of a union between angel and devil. Genesis gives Jessie incredible power, and along with his girlfriend Tulip and Cassidy, an Irish vampire, Jessie goes on a mission to find God. In this comics universe, God has quit His job and left heaven, you see, and Jessie is going to make the Almighty face up to His responsibilities to the faithful.
I found it hard to get into this comic at first, especially the characters. I just loved Cassidy because he was funny and roguish and so archetypically Irish, but the main dude, Jessie, just seemed too arrogant (hell, hes hunting down GOD for Petes Sake). He also used his power a bit too irresponsibly at first. He soon learned, however, and I too soon learned to love him, and all the other quirky character in this crazy book.
I have to say it is the best comic I’ve read in years. It has humor, blood, an odd take on theology, a bit of Western lore, romance, sex, interesting and realistic characters, more than one strong villain, good artwork and an enough action in the storyline to keep you reading. I practically devoured all 8 trade paperbacks in a matter of weeks. I couldn’t even wait until payday to get the next installment. And now the grand finale will be coming out in early April. (Yes, like Vertigo’s other exceptional title 'Sandman,' this comic had a beginning, middle and end.) I can’t wait!
As a side note, I was surprised to hear from Scott at Arcade Comics that one of his regular Preacher customers was an actual preacher. Father also liked that ninja nun series too, whatever its called. Go figure. But then again, Im a Sunday School teacher, and I liked this comic too. All I can say is, try and keep an open mind as you read this one, people. Youll be glad you did.
The only problem I had with the comic, a minor quibble really, was the art on the covers of the trades. The portrayal of the characters was all wrong. But that small complaint is hardly a reason to reduce the rating, I figure. Enjoy.
